Twigg Exploration & Mining Limitada operates the Balama Graphite Operation in the Cabo Delgado province of Mozambique, which is home to one of the world's largest known graphite reserves. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Syrah Resources Limited, an Australian company listed on the Australian Stock Exchange. The Mozambican government, through its entity Empresa Mocambicana de Exloracao Minera, holds a 5% non-diluting free carried equity interest in Twigg.
Project development for the Balama operation was concluded at the end of 2017, with operations commencing at the start of 2018. The open-pit mine's ore is processed on-site through conventional methods like crushing, grinding, flotation, filtration, and drying. At full capacity, the plant can process approximately two million tonnes of ore annually, producing about 350,000 tonnes of natural flake graphite. The mine has an estimated life of over 40 years. The final graphite products are transported to the ports of Nacala and Pemba for export to global industrial customers and the battery anode market, particularly in Asia.
The business model centers on the large-scale extraction and processing of graphite, a critical mineral for electric vehicle batteries and other industrial applications. The company has secured offtake agreements with major industry players, including Tesla, Samsung SDI, and Posco Future. To support its operations, Twigg received a $150 million loan from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), highlighting the project's strategic importance to the global critical minerals supply chain. In May 2024, Twigg was named "Mining Company of the Year" at the Mozambique Mining and Energy Conference.
