Founded in 2020 by a quartet of seasoned industry veterans—Andrew Eaton, Tracey Scoffield, Justin Thomson, and David Tanner—the company leverages the founders' complementary skills and extensive experience in the film and TV sectors. The founders' backgrounds are deeply rooted in production. Eaton, a two-time BAFTA winner, co-founded and ran Revolution Films for over two decades. Scoffield honed her skills at BBC Films as Head of Development and later established Rainmark Films. Thomson began as a film lawyer before moving to Film Four and later co-founding production companies Box TV and Artists Studio. Tanner has a background in physical production, with credits including "The Frankenstein Chronicles" and Steve McQueen's acclaimed "Small Axe" anthology.

The company's business model centers on producing premium, returning drama series and feature films. Turbine Studios serves major international clients, including global streaming platforms like Netflix, Apple TV+, and Amazon, as well as traditional UK broadcasters such as the BBC. This focus on high-value productions for global streamers is a key part of their strategy, aiming to create content that attracts A-list talent and stands out in a crowded market. The company's revenue is generated through the development, packaging, and production of original intellectual property. A significant milestone was securing a strategic investment from BBC Studios in November 2022, which is intended to fuel the growth of its creative and operational teams and investment in development. This partnership followed an earlier investment from Bron Media Corp. in 2020.

Turbine Studios has quickly built a portfolio of critically recognized projects. Productions include the multi-award-winning "Small Axe" for BBC/Amazon, the Netflix feature film "Munich: The Edge of War", and the BAFTA-winning documentary series "Uprising". Another major project is "Constellation," an eight-part psychological thriller developed for Apple TV+. Demonstrating its international ambitions, the company launched a German subsidiary, Turbine Studios Germany, in 2019 to develop and produce content for the European market and provide production services. This expansion allows them to tap into European talent and co-production opportunities, strengthening their position in the global production landscape.
