Tsogo Sun Hotels

Southern Sun Limited, previously known as Tsogo Sun Hotels, is a prominent hospitality company in Southern Africa, listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). The company's history began in 1969 when hotelier Sol Kerzner and South African Breweries (SAB) partnered to create Southern Sun Hotels. Initially, it was the largest hotel group in the Southern Hemisphere, starting with six hotels.

A significant split occurred in 1983, separating the casino operations into what would become Sun International, while the hotel business remained as Southern Sun. The company expanded significantly in 1985 by acquiring the Holiday Inn South Africa hotel group. In June 2019, the business was unbundled into separate hotel and gaming interests, resulting in Tsogo Sun Hotels and Tsogo Sun Gaming being listed separately on the JSE. In May 2022, Tsogo Sun Hotels rebranded back to its original name, Southern Sun.

The group's business model primarily involves owning, leasing, and managing a wide range of hotels. While the company prefers an "asset-heavy" model of owning its properties in South Africa to ensure control and resilience, it also manages hotels for third parties, particularly as a low-risk strategy for entering new offshore markets. Its client base is diverse, catering to business travellers, government, convention markets, and leisure tourists through a multi-brand portfolio that spans from economy to luxury segments. Southern Sun's portfolio includes over 90 hotels across South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique, the Seychelles, and the Middle East. Beyond accommodation, the group operates conference venues, food and beverage outlets, and spas.
