Originating from academic research at the University of Calgary, Trusted Positioning Inc. was established in 2009 by a group of PhD graduates. The founders, including Chris Goodall, Naser El-Sheimy, and Zainab Syed, leveraged their specialized research in Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) for positioning to launch the company. The firm's trajectory includes a significant milestone in 2014 when it was acquired by InvenSense, a move intended to better integrate MEMS hardware with inertial navigation software. This was followed by another change in ownership in 2017 when InvenSense, and consequently Trusted Positioning, became part of the TDK Corporation. In 2020, TDK established Trusted Positioning as an independent business unit to concentrate on software-only positioning offerings.

Trusted Positioning operates by providing software solutions that improve location accuracy where traditional technologies like GNSS falter, such as in urban canyons, tunnels, and indoors. The company's core technology relies on inertial sensors, which provide continuous and reliable positioning information, and combines this data with other sources like geomagnetic signals, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth to filter out inaccuracies and determine the most precise position. This approach serves a diverse client base across markets such as automotive, autonomous vehicles, robotics, micromobility, and indoor industrial applications. Revenue is generated through the sale and licensing of its software products and a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model for its indoor positioning solution.

The company offers a suite of software products tailored to specific use cases. VENUE is an indoor positioning solution that tracks people and assets in large facilities like factories, warehouses, and hospitals, achieving an average accuracy of 1-3 meters without requiring extensive additional infrastructure. For outdoor applications, TRACK provides vehicle dead reckoning for telematics and infotainment systems, ensuring continuous navigation during GNSS outages. RIDE is specifically designed for the micromobility market, improving the positioning of e-scooters and e-bikes for better drop-off accuracy and providing data on rider dynamics. AUTO offers a higher-precision solution for autonomous vehicles and robots by integrating data from inertial sensors, vehicle speed, and perception sensors like radar to achieve decimeter-level accuracy.
