TripScope operated as a software solution provider in the travel technology market, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional travel agents and modern digital travelers. Founded in 2013 by Katelyn O'Shaughnessy, Hiron Menon, Peter Kellis, and Tessa Gold, the company was born from O'Shaughnessy's own experience as a luxury travel agent who identified a need for more dynamic, tech-forward tools in her profession. She sought to counter the notion that travel agents were obsolete by embedding their expertise into a digital platform.
The company's core offering consisted of two main components: an itinerary management website for travel professionals and a corresponding mobile app for their clients. Through the B2B web platform, agents could create, manage, and collaboratively plan digital itineraries. This system was designed to be booking-platform agnostic, allowing agents to input data from various sources. The traveler-facing mobile app delivered these customized itineraries, complete with geo-tagged city guides and real-time updates, directly to a client's smartphone. A key feature was the ability for agents and travelers to communicate directly through the app, ensuring support was available during a trip.
TripScope's business model was primarily B2B, charging travel agents a fee of approximately $10 to $15 per itinerary created. The value proposition for agents was enhanced by a marketing feature; when a client shared their travel experiences on social media via the TripScope app, it would automatically include a link back to the agent's website, generating referrals and leads. The company also explored a consumer-facing model where individuals could use the platform to plan trips and connect with a marketplace of agent specialists. TripScope gained early traction, securing partnerships with travel consortia and a preferred partner agreement with the luxury network Virtuoso. After raising approximately $1.55 million in funding from investors including Amplify.LA, Wavemaker Partners, and former Expedia CEO Erik Blachford, TripScope was acquired by Travefy, a competitor in the itinerary management space, on February 17, 2017. Following the acquisition, the TripScope platform was sunsetted as its users were transitioned to Travefy's services.
