TripBAM was established in 2012 by Steve Reynolds and incorporated in Dallas in April 2013. Reynolds, a serial entrepreneur in the travel technology sector, previously founded several other companies, including CTI, which was later bought by American Express, and TRX, which had a successful IPO. His extensive experience in the field led him to identify a gap in corporate travel management, specifically concerning the volatility of hotel and airfare pricing.
The company operates in the corporate travel market, serving businesses and travel agencies by offering solutions to manage and reduce travel expenditures. Its business model is primarily SaaS-based, providing subscription services to its corporate clients. For individual consumers, the initial model was commission-based, earned from finding and booking lower-cost travel options. TripBAM's core service leverages proprietary technology to continuously monitor booked travel reservations for price drops. Once a lower price for a comparable hotel room or flight is detected, the system automatically rebooks it or alerts the client, generating significant savings. The service audits corporate negotiated discounts, tracks pre-trip spending, and provides detailed analytics, offering transparency into whether hotels honor their contractual agreements like last-room availability. This functionality helps clients like Microsoft and Aon enforce travel policies and optimize their travel programs.
A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Emburse, a leader in travel and expense management, on July 19, 2023. Following the acquisition, TripBAM's technology was integrated into the Emburse Travel suite, which now includes products such as Emburse Reshop, Emburse Travel Benchmark, and Emburse Audit. Steve Reynolds transitioned to the role of General Manager of Emburse Travel and later Chief Strategy Officer, continuing to guide the product's evolution within the larger organization. Prior to the acquisition, TripBAM had successfully raised $1.77 million in funding over two seed rounds.
