Trinean

Trinean was a Belgian-based developer of laboratory instruments specializing in micro-volume molecular spectroscopy for biological sample analysis. Founded in 2006 as a spin-out from the University of Ghent and Imec in Leuven, Belgium, the company focused on providing precise quantification and purity analysis for minute samples of DNA, RNA, and proteins.

The company developed and commercialized analytical platforms that combined UV/VIS spectrophotometers with proprietary microfluidic chips, enabling rapid analysis of samples as small as two microliters. Its primary products included the DropSense96 and Xpose platforms. The DropSense96 system was capable of analyzing up to 96 samples in under five minutes without needing to dilute or mix samples, a significant efficiency gain for laboratories. This technology served life science researchers in academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and bio-pharma, aiming to save time and reduce costs associated with valuable samples and reagents.

Trinean's business model revolved around selling these instrument platforms and the accompanying proprietary consumables, such as the DropPlate microfluidic chips. The company's technology was positioned as a key tool for quality control and assurance in genomics and biologics research. In June 2017, Trinean was acquired by Unchained Labs, a US-based life sciences company. The acquisition was a strategic fit, as Trinean's concentration measurement technology complemented Unchained Labs' portfolio of tools for biologics researchers. At the time of the acquisition, Philippe Stas was the CEO of Trinean.
