Trina Solar, founded in 1997 by Jifan Gao, is a Chinese photovoltaics (PV) company specializing in the research, development, production, and sales of PV products and smart energy solutions. Gao, who holds a master's degree in physical chemistry, was inspired to start the company by global initiatives like the Kyoto Protocol and the U.S. Million Solar Roofs program. The company initially focused on developing high-quality PV products and has since grown into a major global player in the solar industry.
Trina Solar operates a vertically integrated business model, controlling the entire value chain from manufacturing its own cells to integrating them into battery energy storage systems (BESS). This strategy allows for quality control and cost efficiency. The company's offerings include PV modules, power stations, trackers, and system products for residential, commercial, industrial, and utility-scale clients worldwide. A significant part of its business is now dedicated to energy storage solutions through its Trina Storage division, which provides advanced battery technology and integrated systems like the Elementa for grid-scale applications and the Nexeos for residential use.
The business model involves direct sales, partnerships with distributors and system integrators, and the development of standalone storage projects. These projects participate in capacity markets and provide grid services such as frequency regulation and peak shaving to generate revenue. Having been listed on the NYSE in 2006, the company later delisted and, in June 2020, went public on the STAR Market of the Shanghai Stock Exchange.
