Tri Global Energy
Tri Global Energy was founded in January 2009 with a commitment to becoming a leader in the development of renewable energy.
Tri Global Energy, LLC (TGE) operates as a developer of utility-scale renewable energy projects, with a primary focus on onshore wind and an expanding portfolio in solar and energy storage. Founded in 2009 by John B. Billingsley, Jr., the Dallas-based company established itself as a significant player in the U.S. renewable energy sector, particularly in Texas. Billingsley, a life-long entrepreneur with a diverse background in accounting, banking, and real estate, was inspired to enter the renewables market after identifying a need for a more equitable business model for landowners and communities.
The company's core business model, known as the "Wind Force Plan," facilitates the development of wind energy projects by partnering with local landowners and community investors, offering them direct equity participation. This approach involves leasing large tracts of land for project development and guaranteeing payments, which proved instrumental in the company's rapid growth. TGE's business strategy centers on originating, developing, and then selling these energy projects to major equity partners and operators, such as NextEra, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, and Engie. Revenue is generated through development fees from these sales and, in some cases, ongoing royalty streams.
Since its inception, Tri Global Energy has developed over 8.7 gigawatts of power across 37 projects in states including Texas, Illinois, Indiana, and Nebraska. For over a decade, it has been the leading developer of wind energy projects under construction in Texas. A significant milestone occurred in September 2022, when Canadian energy infrastructure company Enbridge Inc. acquired Tri Global Energy for $270 million plus potential contingency payments. Following the acquisition, TGE continues to operate under its own name as an Enbridge company, with its development team remaining in place to manage its substantial pipeline of projects.
