Trendabl emerged in 2011 as a specialized social media platform catering exclusively to the fashion vertical. The company was founded by Jon Alagem, who transitioned from a career in finance at a hedge fund to the tech startup scene, operating initially from his New York apartment with two friends. Alagem, an NYU business school graduate, identified a niche for a dedicated community where fashion enthusiasts, designers, and brands could share and discover trends without the content dilution of broader photo-sharing apps.
The business operated as a mobile-first social network, with an iPhone application that allowed users to upload photos of clothing and accessories. Its core functionality enabled users to apply photo filters and, crucially, tag items with specific metadata such as the brand, store, color, and price. This structure created a searchable, user-generated database of fashion items, distinguishing it from general photo platforms. The platform successfully attracted high-profile brands and designers, including Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Barneys New York, who used the app to post their own content, leveraging it as a direct marketing channel to a targeted audience.
In October 2012, Trendabl secured $835,000 in a seed funding round from prominent investors, including Khosla Ventures, Forerunner Ventures, and Lerer Hippeau Ventures. The monetization strategy was focused on building a critical mass of users and brand engagement, with future plans pointing towards integrating e-commerce capabilities to allow direct purchasing from the app. Despite its initial traction and strong backing, the company eventually ceased operations. PitchBook data indicates the company was out of business by April 2016. Following his venture with Trendabl, founder Jon Alagem co-founded Harper + Scott in 2014, a successful creative agency specializing in branded merchandise.
