Treepz is a corporate mobility and vehicle rental services provider operating across several African countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, and Kenya, with a recent expansion to Canada. Founded in September 2019 as Plentywaka by Onyeka Akumah, Johnny Enagwolor, Afolabi Oluseyi, and John Shaibu, the company was born from a desire to address the challenging transportation system in Africa.
The company initially launched as a bus-hailing platform in Lagos, Nigeria, before rebranding to Treepz in September 2021 to support a more global identity. It has since pivoted its business model to focus on corporate mobility and a car-sharing marketplace. This marketplace allows individuals and rental companies to list their vehicles—including sedans, SUVs, and buses—for rent, with hosts setting their own prices. The company's core services now include employee transportation for major firms, school bus solutions, and vehicle rentals for events and conferences. This strategic shift to an asset-light aggregation model followed the discovery that rental services offered higher profit margins than bus-hailing.
CEO Onyeka Akumah is a serial entrepreneur with a background in technology, agriculture, and e-commerce, having co-founded ventures like Farmcrowdy and RentSmallSmall. His experience spans leadership roles at Jumia, Konga, and Deloitte. Co-founder and President Johnny Enagwolor has a background in accounting and previously founded a logistics firm and held roles in e-business at Stanbic IBTC Bank.
Treepz has pursued an aggressive expansion strategy, largely through acquisitions. It acquired Ghana's Stabus in September 2021 and Uganda's Ugabus in November 2021, rebranding them as Treepz Ghana and Treepz Uganda, respectively. By February 2023, the company had launched in Kenya. Treepz has raised a total of $4.42 million in funding over six seed rounds from investors such as Techstars, Google for Startups Black Founders Fund Africa, GIIG Africa Fund, and Goodwater Capital.
