In 1988, a group of telecom systems experts founded TranSwitch in Shelton, Connecticut, with a mission to design and develop specialized integrated circuits. The company focused on creating semiconductor solutions for the telecommunications and data communications industries. Their products, which included multiplexers and converters, were essential components for equipment manufacturers building out the burgeoning internet and network infrastructure. As the demand for faster and more reliable communication grew, TranSwitch established itself as a public company, trading on the NASDAQ under the ticker TXCC. The company expanded its reach and capabilities through strategic acquisitions. In 2001, it acquired ONEX Communications to enhance its offerings for metropolitan area networks. This was followed by the acquisition of Centillium Communications in 2008 for approximately $42.8 million, a move designed to strengthen its position in the growing Fiber-to-the-Home and Voice-over-IP markets. Despite these efforts to innovate and consolidate, the company faced significant financial headwinds. After years of unprofitability, the end of the road came in late 2013. In November of that year, TranSwitch Corporation filed a voluntary petition for liquidation under Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Shortly after, in early 2014, its high-speed interface IP assets and its experienced development team were acquired by Cadence Design Systems, marking the final chapter for TranSwitch as an independent entity.
