Torrent Technologies operates as a technology and service provider for insurance carriers and agents, specializing in flood insurance solutions. Founded in 2005 by Travis Pine and Theresa "TJ" Johnston, the company aimed to modernize the flood insurance industry by leveraging new technology. Both founders, native to Kalispell, Montana, started the company in Seattle to be near the technology hub but established the main operations center in their hometown. In October 2014, Torrent Technologies was acquired by Marsh, a global leader in insurance broking and risk management, becoming a Marsh company. The acquisition was a strategic expansion for Marsh, which had already been using Torrent's platform since 2013. Following the acquisition, Torrent's team combined with Marsh's flood specialists to create a Flood Center of Excellence.
The company's business model is centered on providing business services to Write Your Own (WYO) insurance companies that participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). It functions as a service provider and managing general agent, offering a technology platform that allows insurance agents to quote, bind, and issue flood policies in real-time. This platform supports both NFIP policies and a growing portfolio of private primary and excess flood insurance products, accessible through a single-entry system. Torrent serves a range of clients, from property owners, homeowners, and renters to small and mid-sized businesses, empowering them with comprehensive flood insurance options.
Torrent's flagship product is TorrentFlood®, a web-based, paperless, and real-time integrated flood solution. This platform has significantly changed how private insurance carriers operate within the NFIP by providing tools for real-time processing and higher accuracy. Key features include the ability to issue over 60% of policies instantly without manual review, a risk rating platform, and end-to-end claims handling. Another offering, GetFlood®, is a website interface that enables consumers and agents to obtain flood insurance quotes quickly. The company has also expanded its offerings to include private flood insurance products like FloodPlus Commercial, underwritten by Hiscox, and Flood Guard, an admitted residential flood insurance program from Palomar Specialty Insurance Company.
