TopCo is a South Korean media company that operates the webtoon platform Toptoon, specializing in digital comics, with a significant focus on the adult (18+) content niche. Founded on January 24, 2014, as TopComics Co., Ltd. by Yoo Jeong-seok, the company was rebranded as Topco at the end of 2016. Yoo serves as the company's CEO.
The company has established itself as a major competitor in South Korea's paid webtoon market, distinguishing itself from larger platforms like Naver and Kakao by catering to a mature audience. This strategy has proven successful, with its Toptoon platform attracting 24 million accumulated users in its domestic market. The business model relies on a paid, subscription-based service for its content. A key feature of its operations is an in-house studio with approximately 100 artists, which allows the company to produce original content, leading to higher operating profit margins compared to platforms that primarily distribute external work.
TopCo is actively pursuing global expansion. In July 2021, it launched "Toptoon Plus," an English-language version of its platform, to target markets in the United States, Canada, the UK, and other English-speaking countries. This global platform experienced rapid growth, securing 1.5 million members within nine months of its launch. To support this expansion, TopCo established a U.S. subsidiary, Topco International, in March 2022 to manage the platform and develop its intellectual property (IP) business in the region. The company also operates in Taiwan and Japan, and is pursuing strategic alliances with major content operators in China.
In 2022, TopCo announced plans for a backdoor listing on the Kosdaq exchange by merging with its affiliates: Topco Media, a communications equipment manufacturer it acquired, and Metacraft, a web novel platform. This strategic merger aims to create a comprehensive web content company that covers webtoons and web novels, enabling it to further develop its IP by producing dramas and movies based on its original content.
