TooNFT operates as a decentralized, blockchain-based trading platform focused on the webtoon, manga, and comic industry. Founded in 2021 and based in South Korea, the company aims to restructure the relationship between creators, readers, and investors by eliminating traditional intermediaries. This is achieved by allowing creators to convert their digital comics into Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), which can then be traded in a peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplace. The model is designed to establish a transparent and direct compensation system for artists and stakeholders.
A significant strategic element of TooNFT's market entry is its affiliation with Toomics, one of South Korea's largest webtoon service providers. Toomics, established in 2015, provides TooNFT with access to a substantial existing user base of over 50 million people and deep industry expertise. This collaboration allows TooNFT to launch its Web3 functionalities within a well-established ecosystem. The firm secured $1.75 million in a seed funding round on January 10, 2022, led by Hg Ventures with participation from other institutional investors, to develop its NFT infrastructure.
The TooNFT platform enables direct exchanges and facilitates a system where stakeholders who develop and distribute content can share in the profits generated. Its native utility token, TOON, is central to the ecosystem, used for accessing services, staking, and participating in governance through a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization). This governance model allows the community to vote on aspects like content selection. By creating a direct channel between producers and consumers, the platform addresses market challenges and aims to improve compensation for content creators.
