Tongzhong Media
Tongzhong Media is an elevator advertising service provider.
Tongzhong Media, legally registered as Shenzhen Tongzhong Advertising Co., Ltd., operates as a specialized elevator media company with a significant footprint in China's out-of-home advertising market. The company was founded by Luo Fei, who currently serves as its CEO. Luo's journey into the media landscape began after he graduated from Shenzhen University's computer science department in 2001 and subsequently worked in sales for the broadband division of Topway Video Communication (天威视讯). Drawing on the entrepreneurial spirit of Shenzhen, he initially established a business acting as a community promotion agent for telecom operators. This early venture provided him with crucial access to and relationships with property management companies, along with a portfolio of community bulletin board resources.
Identifying a market opportunity in the elevator media space, Luo Fei transitioned his business and established Tongzhong Media in 2007. The company's core business revolves around the strategic placement of static advertisements in the waiting areas of elevators, a segment it pioneered with its signature "large frame" bulletin boards. This approach is positioned as a cost-effective alternative to the digital screens inside elevators, focusing on capturing the audience's attention during the often-longer wait times. The business model involves partnering with property management to upgrade existing community bulletin boards, integrating dedicated advertising space which is then leased to clients. Revenue is generated by selling this advertising space to a diverse client base that ranges from local businesses to major internet corporations.
A significant milestone in the company's history was securing a strategic investment of several tens of millions of RMB from the classified advertising giant 58.com in October 2019. This investment underscored the growing value of community-focused offline advertising channels. By that time, Tongzhong Media had already established a substantial presence, covering nearly 100,000 high-rise residential buildings across more than 20 key Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. This network allows it to reach an estimated audience of nearly 100 million middle-class consumers. The company leverages its accumulated data to provide clients with targeted advertising solutions based on the demographic profiles of the buildings it covers.
