TokeText was an Ontario-based cannabis technology company that operated a proprietary, text-based e-commerce platform. The service enabled consumers to discover and purchase cannabis products by replying to a daily featured product text, bypassing traditional online checkout carts. It was designed to help cannabis retailers increase sales, expand their customer reach, and build loyalty through a frictionless shopping experience. The business model involved taking a small percentage of each sale conducted through the platform.
Founded in 2019 by serial entrepreneur Jeremy Potvin, TokeText was initially developed as a tool for his parent company, Weedbox, and its affiliated stores. Potvin, who had previous startup experience in staff management software and other e-commerce ventures, launched TokeText in March 2020. The platform quickly gained traction, and the company decided to open it to all retailers to better serve the Canadian market. A significant milestone was the acquisition of Goodtimes Ltd. in December 2021, which owned the multi-retailer e-commerce platforms Super Anytime (cannabis) and Boozer (alcohol). This acquisition was intended to fast-track TokeText's product roadmap by integrating mobile app and web ordering capabilities to create an omnichannel experience. However, according to market intelligence firm Tracxn, TokeText is now considered a deadpooled company.
