Todaytickets GmbH emerged in the German market as a mobile-first marketplace for last-minute event ticketing. The company was established in 2013 by a management team with considerable experience in e-commerce and digital ventures: Christian Miele, previously with Rocket Internet and Bertelsmann India Investments; Gleb Tritus, a serial entrepreneur who founded Affaires Media and Townster; and Michael Jaeger, formerly of the last-minute hotel booking app JustBook.
The business model addressed two distinct market needs. For consumers, it offered a curated platform to purchase tickets for a wide array of events—from major concerts to theatre and sports—at significant discounts, typically between 20% to 50% off the pre-sale price. This was facilitated through a user-friendly mobile application and website, allowing bookings up to 60 minutes before an event's commencement. For event organizers and the live entertainment industry, Todaytickets provided a channel to monetize perishable inventory, tackling the persistent issue of unsold tickets which can account for up to 40% of venue capacity. The company generated revenue by taking a commission on the tickets sold through its platform.
The venture was strategically backed by EPIC Companies, the investment arm of the ProSiebenSat.1 media conglomerate, providing substantial media reach across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It also attracted investment from several prominent business angels. Despite its promising start and expansion into cities like Cologne, Hamburg, and Munich, the company faced challenges in a difficult market and struggled to secure a significant Series A funding round. In February 2015, Todaytickets was acquired by the Spanish ticketing platform Ticketea, which was looking to accelerate its expansion into the German market. The acquisition included the company's mobile technology, database, and client relationships, though the employees did not join Ticketea. Following the acquisition, the Todaytickets brand and its applications were phased out.
