Tobii is a Swedish technology company that develops and sells products for eye tracking and attention computing. Founded in 2001 by John Elvesjö, Mårten Skogö, and Henrik Eskilsson, the company originated from a vision to transform human-computer interaction. The founders, who met as students at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, aimed to create technology that could understand human attention, a concept they termed 'attention computing'. Tobii became a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq Stockholm on April 22, 2015.
The company's core business revolves around its proprietary eye-tracking technology, which uses illuminators and cameras to track the center of the pupil and reflections on the cornea to calculate a user's gaze point. This technology is integrated into both hardware and software solutions. Tobii's business model is multifaceted, encompassing direct product sales of hardware and software, licensing its technology for integration into third-party products, and providing consulting services. Its client base is diverse, spanning industries such as scientific research, healthcare, automotive, education, training, gaming, and consumer electronics. Key partners and clients include major tech and automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), as well as research institutions.
Tobii's product portfolio includes screen-based and wearable eye trackers, integration platforms, and data-analysis software. These products serve various applications, from behavioral studies in psychology and marketing to enhancing accessibility for individuals with disabilities. In gaming, the technology enables features like natural targeting and extended screen views by reacting to a player's gaze. For the automotive sector, Tobii provides in-cabin sensing solutions. A significant part of its history involved assistive technology, which was consolidated under Tobii Dynavox. This unit, which developed speech-generating devices for non-verbal individuals, was spun off in October 2021. In April 2022, the remaining business units, Tobii Pro and Tobii Tech, were merged into a single entity, Tobii AB.
