Timehop is a mobile application that aggregates a user's digital past, presenting photos, videos, and social media posts from the same calendar day in previous years. The company originated in February 2011 at a Foursquare Hackathon as an experimental project called "4SquareAnd7YearsAgo," created by developers Jonathan Wegener and Benny Wong. Initially, it was a simple daily email service that replayed users' past Foursquare check-ins. The positive user response prompted the founders to expand the service, incorporating other platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and rebranding as Timehop.
The company serves a global consumer market, operating as a content-aggregating mobile app for iOS and Android devices. Users connect their accounts from various services, including Apple Photos, Google Photos, Dropbox, Flickr, Facebook, and Instagram, to receive a daily curated feed of their personal history. Revenue is primarily generated through programmatic advertising. Facing financial challenges, Timehop made a strategic decision to build its own ad server, Nimbus, which significantly increased its revenue by optimizing ad placements without degrading the user experience. This ad platform proved so successful it was later launched as a separate software-as-a-service (SaaS) product for other publishers.
After its inception, Timehop secured $14.1 million in funding over several rounds, including a $10 million Series B in 2014 led by Shasta Ventures. A significant milestone in the company's journey was its acquisition by Sincere Corporation in June 2023 for an undisclosed amount. This move placed Timehop within a portfolio of family-oriented brands that includes the digital invitation platform Punchbowl and the video memory service Memento, creating an ecosystem where users can plan events, preserve memories, and relive them for years to come. In 2018, the company experienced a significant data breach that affected approximately 21 million users, compromising data such as names, email addresses, and phone numbers, which led to the implementation of enhanced security measures.
