Timber.io, founded in 2016 and officially named Timber Technologies, Inc., developed a high-performance, vendor-agnostic observability data pipeline. The company was co-founded by Zach Sherman and Ben Johnson, who served as CEO and CTO, respectively. Both founders previously worked at SeatGeek and brought their expertise in software engineering and product design to their new venture. The initial concept for Timber was a cloud-based logging platform that transformed unstructured log data into structured, readable events, initially supporting Ruby, Elixir, and Node.js.
The company's core product evolved into Vector, an open-source observability data pipeline that allows users to collect, transform, enrich, and route logs, metrics, and other observability data from any source to any destination. Vector was designed to give developers and enterprises control over their data, helping to reduce costs, avoid vendor lock-in, and enhance data security. The platform gained significant traction, with millions of downloads per month, and was adopted by major enterprises.
Timber.io secured venture capital funding from investors including NextView Ventures, Wonder Ventures, and Notation Capital, raising a total of $5.8 million. On February 11, 2021, the monitoring and security platform Datadog announced its acquisition of Timber.io for an undisclosed amount. Following the acquisition, the core Timber team, including founders Zach Sherman and Ben Johnson, joined Datadog to integrate Vector's technology and continue its development as a long-term, open-source project under Datadog's stewardship.
