Tikal Filters provides a disaster-resilient water filtration system designed for areas with electricity insecurity. The company is developing a portable, three-piece detachable system that uses self-generated energy from solar, wind, and thermal sources to purify water.
The filtration technology is inspired by ancient Mayan techniques, using a multilayer design with an oyster-based biomimicry concept to remove contaminants. This system is engineered to be biodegradable and recyclable, with features that include use as a lamp or portable battery. Tikal focuses on converting contaminated surface water and sewage from flooding into safe drinking water, aiming to improve sanitation and health standards.
The company is in the prototype and MVP development stage, conducting customer discovery with NGOs and government representatives in disaster-prone or water-stressed areas like Honolulu, Hawaii, and Flint, Michigan. The business model includes direct sales to users as well as to governmental and non-governmental organizations focused on disaster relief. The team, which includes co-founder and CEO Tayyaba Ali, is working with partners such as the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency and Genesee County Habitat for Humanity to pilot the device.
