Threads Styling operates as a personalized luxury shopping and fashion concierge service, pioneering a model centered on chat-based commerce. The company was founded in 2009 by Sophie Hill, a former fashion buyer and stylist, whose expertise in the luxury sector shaped the firm's direction. Hill identified a gap in the market for a new generation of high-net-worth consumers who preferred a more convenient and personalized retail experience, leading her to build the service in direct response to how this clientele wanted to communicate and shop.
The firm's business model is distinctly social-first, leveraging platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok to generate style inspiration and discover new brands for its target audience of Gen Z and Millennial clients. Once a client is engaged, the interaction transitions to a one-on-one conversation on chat platforms such as WhatsApp, iMessage, and WeChat. Here, a team of in-house personal shoppers provides bespoke styling advice and sources hard-to-find luxury items. This approach allows Threads Styling to operate without holding physical inventory, instead working on a commission basis with a network of over 600 brands and retailers, including prominent names like Dior, Chanel, and Rolex. Products are then drop-shipped directly from brand partners or consolidated at Threads' warehouses for a single shipment.
Initially growing through word-of-mouth, the company has since raised significant capital, including a $12 million funding round in March 2022, to fuel its expansion. This funding has supported the launch of a more traditional e-commerce website, primarily focused on fine jewellery, and the introduction of live shopping events to broaden its audience reach. Despite these new channels, the chat-based service remains the core of the business. A major milestone occurred in September 2022 when Dubai-based luxury retailer Chalhoub Group acquired a majority stake in the company. Following the acquisition, Threads Styling continues to operate as an independent entity with Sophie Hill remaining as CEO.
