In Northern Ireland, James Thompson, an innovator in aircraft seating, founded Thompson Aero Seating with a specific goal: to solve the puzzle of space and comfort in business class. The company's breakthrough came with the introduction of the Vantage seat, a fully lie-flat bed that used a clever staggered design to maximize cabin density without sacrificing passenger space. This design was a game-changer, allowing airlines to offer a premium flat-bed experience while maintaining seat count. The Vantage and its successors, like the VantageXL, quickly gained traction, securing contracts with major global airlines. This success was built on a reputation for engineering premium, reliable, and space-efficient seating solutions for both single and twin-aisle aircraft. The company became known for its ability to create bespoke products that enhanced an airline's brand and the passenger experience. A pivotal chapter in the company's journey came in late 2016. Thompson Aero Seating was acquired by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), a large, state-owned aerospace and defense conglomerate. The acquisition provided significant industrial backing, enabling Thompson to expand its capacity to meet a rapidly growing order book while continuing its growth and operations from its base in Northern Ireland.
