Founded in 2002 as Apangea Learning, and later known as Think Through Learning, the Pittsburgh-based company carved a niche in the K-12 education technology market. The firm was established by Louis Piconi, who served as a co-founder and Senior Vice President. Think Through Learning developed an adaptive learning platform focused on mathematics remediation for students from grade 3 through Algebra I.
The company's business model was centered on a Software as a Service (SaaS) offering sold to school districts. Its flagship product, Think Through Math (TTM), provided a web-based, supplemental math curriculum. A key differentiator of the TTM system was the integration of live, on-demand tutoring from state-certified teachers, providing immediate support to students as they navigated the adaptive learning paths. The platform also incorporated motivational tools, such as gamified point systems that could be converted into charitable donations, and provided real-time reporting for educators to inform their instructional decisions. The system was designed to align with various state standards, including the Common Core State Standards and TEKS.
Demonstrating significant growth, the company secured $5.6 million in a Series B funding round in September 2013, which included an investment from SJF Ventures. By 2014, its software was implemented in over 13,000 schools across 48 states. A major milestone occurred in October 2016 when Imagine Learning, a provider of language and literacy software solutions, acquired Think Through Learning. This acquisition was part of a broader strategy by Imagine Learning's parent company, Weld North, to build a comprehensive digital K-12 learning platform combining literacy and math. Following the acquisition, the Think Through Math product was integrated into Imagine Learning's expanding portfolio of educational software.
