In 1934, a company named American Rock Wool was founded in Wabash, Indiana, with a focus on manufacturing mineral wool insulation. This wasn't just any insulation; it was created from slag, a byproduct of the steel industry, giving it exceptional fire-resistant properties. For decades, the company quietly built its reputation, becoming a critical component in fire safety for buildings. A significant chapter began in 1959 when United States Gypsum (USG) acquired the company. Later rebranded as Thermafiber, the firm became a leader in life safety systems for high-rise buildings. Its products have been installed in some of the world's tallest and most iconic structures, including the Burj Khalifa and One World Trade Center. After being sold by USG in 1996 and operating as a privately held company, another major event marked its timeline. In 2013, the building materials giant Owens Corning announced its acquisition of Thermafiber. This move integrated Thermafiber's specialized mineral wool into Owens Corning's broader portfolio of fiberglass and foam insulation, expanding its reach into high-temperature commercial applications. Today, as an Owens Corning company, Thermafiber continues its legacy of enhancing building safety and energy conservation.
