TheMarkets.com was a financial technology and data firm established in 1999 as a consortium of ten prominent investment banks, including BofA Merrill Lynch, Citi, Credit Suisse, and Goldman Sachs. The company was co-founded by David Eisner, who also served as its CEO. Eisner's background includes nearly two decades of experience in capital markets and internet technology, having previously been the founding investor and CEO of iExchange.com and an executive at Jefferies Group Inc.
The firm operated as a subscription-based platform, providing third-party equity and fixed-income research, earnings models, and estimates to institutional investment management firms across the globe. Its primary clientele consisted of buy-side firms, including a significant portion of the largest asset managers in the US and Europe, as well as top global hedge funds. TheMarkets.com's core offering was designed to streamline investors' access to research from a diverse range of providers, enhancing workflow and performance. The platform was distinguished by its provision of proprietary valuation models from leading brokers.
A major milestone for TheMarkets.com was its acquisition by Capital IQ, a division of Standard & Poor's (S&P), in September 2010 for a reported $300 million. This all-cash deal was a strategic move by Capital IQ to bolster its offerings for buy-side clients by integrating TheMarkets.com's extensive research and estimates business. The acquisition aimed to create a comprehensive investment research and analysis platform by combining Capital IQ's data and analytics with TheMarkets.com's network of over 1,000 global research contributors. Following the acquisition, TheMarkets.com's platform and services were integrated into the Capital IQ product suite.
