The Spaceship Company

The Spaceship Company (TSC) operates as the dedicated aerospace-system manufacturing and development organization for Virgin Galactic. Established in 2005, the company was a strategic joint venture between Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group and aerospace engineer Burt Rutan's Scaled Composites. This partnership was born from the success of SpaceShipOne, the first privately-funded crewed spacecraft, which won the Ansari X Prize in 2004, a feat backed by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and accomplished by Rutan's team. The collaboration aimed to leverage Rutan's groundbreaking designs and Scaled Composites' prototyping expertise to build a commercial fleet of spacecraft. In 2012, Virgin Galactic assumed full ownership of TSC, acquiring Scaled Composites' 30% stake to vertically integrate its manufacturing capabilities.

Headquartered at the Mojave Air and Space Port in California, TSC is responsible for the end-to-end development of Virgin Galactic's human spaceflight system. This system consists of two primary components: the WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft and the SpaceShipTwo reusable spaceship. The business model is centered on manufacturing these vehicles exclusively for its parent company, Virgin Galactic, which in turn sells tickets to private individuals and researchers for suborbital spaceflights. The flight process involves the WhiteKnightTwo aircraft taking off horizontally with the SpaceShipTwo attached, carrying it to an altitude of approximately 50,000 feet before releasing it. At that point, the spaceship ignites its hybrid rocket motor, ascending to suborbital space where passengers experience several minutes of weightlessness before gliding back to a runway landing.

TSC's initial mandate was to produce a fleet based on the prototypes developed by Scaled Composites, including five SpaceShipTwos and two WhiteKnightTwos. The first WhiteKnightTwo was named VMS Eve, and the first SpaceShipTwo was christened VSS Enterprise. Following the VSS Enterprise, TSC manufactured VSS Unity, which completed multiple spaceflights before its retirement. The company has been advancing its production capabilities, developing the next-generation SpaceShip III class of vehicles, starting with VSS Imagine and VSS Inspire. These newer models feature a modular design intended to improve maintenance efficiency and increase flight frequency. Looking ahead, TSC is fabricating the new "Delta" class of spaceships, designed to carry more passengers and support a higher cadence of flights, with commercial operations anticipated to resume in 2026.
