In the world of travel retail, few stories are as straightforward as that of The Nuance Group. Founded in 1992, the company established itself as an operator of retail outlets at airports. Headquartered in Glattbrugg, Switzerland, Nuance managed a variety of store formats, from classic duty-free shops to specialized brand boutiques and concept stores. Their business model was simple: provide a diverse product mix tailored to the needs of different travelers passing through their global locations. The company grew to operate over 350 stores across 19 countries, making it a significant player in the airport retail space. This scale, however, eventually positioned them as an attractive target for an even larger entity. The pivotal moment in Nuance's journey arrived in 2014. In June of that year, industry leader Dufry signed an agreement to acquire 100% of The Nuance Group for a considerable CHF 1.55 billion. The deal was finalized in September 2014, solidifying Dufry's position as a global leader in travel retail. The acquisition was a strategic move for Dufry to expand its footprint in Asia, the Mediterranean, Europe, and North America, integrating Nuance's 66 locations into its massive operation.
