The Master Trust Bank of Japan, Ltd. (MTBJ) is a trust bank specializing in asset administration services. Founded on May 9, 2000, it was the first trust bank in Japan to be exclusively dedicated to the asset administration business. The bank was established through a joint investment by Mitsubishi Trust Bank (now Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation), Nippon Life Insurance, Toyo Trust Bank, Meiji Life Insurance, and Deutsche Bank. Today, its primary shareholders are Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation (46.5%), Nippon Life Insurance Company (33.5%), Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Company (10.0%), and The Norinchukin Trust & Banking Co., Ltd. (10.0%). MTBJ operates as a consolidated subsidiary of Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation and is part of the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG).
The bank's core business is providing comprehensive asset administration for clients including pension funds, investment trusts, and other institutional investors. Its services include the custody and management of securities, fund administration, and reporting services. MTBJ supports the global investment activities of institutional investors by leveraging its IT investment management system and an information network that spans approximately 130 countries, requiring deep knowledge of various legal and tax systems. The bank also provides online information reporting services, a capability it has offered since its inception. The business model is focused on outsourcing arrangements, handling the asset management needs for its parent companies and other financial institutions. As of March 2025, the bank's assets under management reached approximately 770 trillion yen.
Headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, Japan, the bank has achieved several milestones, including reaching over 700 trillion yen in assets under management in March 2024 and celebrating its 25th anniversary in May 2025. The current president is Yushi Ando.
