The Esports Observer (TEO) was established in 2015 as a media and information platform dedicated to the business side of the rapidly expanding esports market. It was co-founded by Christopher Hana, who also served as its CEO, to address a lack of reliable and transparent information for professionals and companies looking to navigate the esports industry. Hana, who had prior experience as a personal growth coach and mentor, aimed to create a resource that would foster growth and enable better-informed business decisions within the sector.
Originally launched as part of the BITKRAFT Esports Ventures network, TEO quickly became a key source for industry news, data, and analysis. The company's business model centered on providing real-time business intelligence, in-depth reports, and hosting industry-specific events and conferences. This integrated platform served a client base of professionals, investors, and companies, both those native to esports and those looking to enter the market.
A significant milestone occurred in October 2017, when Sports Business Journal (SBJ), owned by American City Business Journals, made a substantial investment in the company, initiating an editorial and commercial partnership aimed at expanding TEO's U.S. coverage and conference activities. This collaboration culminated in the acquisition of The Esports Observer by SBJ's parent company, Advance Publications, in October 2018. The acquisition was intended to leverage synergies, providing TEO's audience with more granular data by utilizing Advance's other assets, like the analytics firm Newzoo. In July 2021, The Esports Observer was fully integrated into the Sports Business Journal website, with its content becoming part of a new esports channel, granting SBJ subscribers full access to TEO's award-winning coverage. Christopher Hana stepped down as CEO in January 2022 to pursue a new role, remaining with the parent company as a consultant.
