The Beer Café is an Indian chain of alco-beverage restaurants and bars founded in April 2012 by Rahul Singh. The first outlet was launched in Gurugram with the vision of introducing a casual, neighborhood café culture focused on beer, filling a market gap between traditional bars and coffee shops.
The founder, Rahul Singh, is a textile engineer by qualification with a professional background in the lifestyle and sportswear industry. After a previous entrepreneurial venture, Golfworx, failed and led to bankruptcy, Singh identified a market opportunity in the alco-beverage sector. He observed that while social events at his former business struggled to draw crowds, anything involving alcohol was popular. To launch The Beer Café, Singh mortgaged his house to secure the initial seed capital.
The company operates on a casual dining and bar model, often located in high-footfall areas like malls. Its core offering is a wide selection of international and domestic beers, paired with a diverse food menu. The business model is designed to be replicable, scalable, and sustainable, with a significant portion of outlets being company-owned, while also offering a franchise model. In October 2022, The Beer Café was acquired by B9 Beverages, the parent company of craft beer brand Bira 91, in an all-stock deal. Following the acquisition, The Beer Café became a subsidiary of Bira 91, and Rahul Singh took on the role of managing the combined entity's retail outlet division, including The Beer Café and the newly established Bira Taprooms. This strategic merger created one of India's largest direct-to-consumer platforms for beer.
