The Artful Baker

The Artful Baker was a UK-based artisanal food company specializing in hand-baked sweet and savoury biscotti. The company was founded by Paul Rostand in 2013, initially named the New Forest Biscotti Company, and later rebranded to The Great British Biscotti Co. in 2016. The Artful Baker brand was launched in 2020 to house the biscotti products and to allow for future expansion into other baked goods.

Rostand, who had a background in sourcing food concepts for private-label ranges, identified a gap in the market for high-quality, less-hard biscotti to accompany the UK's growing coffee culture. The company focused on creating biscotti with unique flavour combinations using high-quality ingredients without palm oil, such as sour cherry & dark chocolate, smoked jalapeño & lime, and fennel with pink peppercorn. The product line included sweet biscotti thins, savoury nibbles, and single batons, as well as vegan and gluten-free options.

The business supplied its products to the independent retail and foodservice sectors, including delis, cafes, The National Trust, and hamper companies. It also produced private-label products for major retailers like Hotel Chocolat and Aldi. In February 2021, The Artful Baker received a six-figure investment from Batch Ventures, a joint venture between the bakery giant Warburtons and the accelerator Mission Ventures, to support its growth. Despite its successes, including exporting to North America, Europe, and the Middle East, the company faced significant financial challenges. In April 2024, The Artful Baker ceased trading and went into liquidation, citing insurmountable inflationary pressures on raw materials, energy, and labour, which were compounded by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
