Founded in 2012 by data scientist Luca Foschini, The Activity Exchange originated in San Francisco as a platform focused on behavioral health management and patient engagement. The company's creation was directly influenced by Foschini's extensive background in computer science and machine learning, which includes research positions at Google and a Ph.D. from U.C. Santa Barbara, centering his career on developing algorithms to measure and improve health outcomes.
The Activity Exchange developed a technology platform designed to aggregate and analyze data from a variety of health and fitness applications and wearable devices. Its primary service was to provide healthcare providers, insurance companies, and employers with the tools needed to monitor and enhance the health of their members and patients. The business model was centered on enabling these client organizations to build better engagement with their patient communities through the platform's analytics engine. This engine offered insights, optimized communication via adaptive learning, and provided visualization and reporting functionalities to improve health outcomes.
A significant milestone in the company's history was its merger with Evidation Health in 2014. Evidation was established through a joint effort by GE Ventures and Stanford Health Care to quantify the real-world value of digital health technologies. The merger integrated The Activity Exchange's predictive analytics, machine learning expertise, and sophisticated software platform into Evidation, forming the technological backbone of the new entity. This strategic combination allowed Evidation to measure the real-world impact of various health interventions, with Activity Exchange co-founder Christine Lemke becoming President of the newly merged company.
