In 1910, The Automobile Association established its operations in Ireland, setting up its first office on Nassau Street, Dublin. Born from the British automobile association, The AA, its initial focus was straightforward: provide services and assistance to a growing number of motorists on Irish roads. For over a century, it built a trusted brand around roadside rescue and became a leading insurance provider. For most of its history, AA Ireland was part of the same group as its UK counterpart. The first major turning point in its corporate structure came in August 2016. In a significant move, the company was acquired by the American investment group Carlyle Cardinal Ireland for €156.6 million, officially separating it from AA plc. This transaction marked the beginning of a new chapter, operating as a standalone Irish entity. The new ownership invested significantly in technology and operations to prepare the business for future growth. A second major event occurred just four years later. In October 2020, AA Ireland was sold again, this time to Further Global Capital Management, a US private equity firm, in a deal valued at over €240 million. This acquisition signaled confidence in the company's resilience and its core business of insurance and breakdown cover. Today, AA Ireland continues to operate from Dublin, serving hundreds of thousands of customers across the country.
