In 1991, Shinawatra Computer and Communications Co. Ltd., founded by Thaksin Shinawatra, embarked on a groundbreaking journey to revolutionize Thailand's telecommunications landscape. The company signed a $100 million contract with Hughes Space and Communications Company to build Thailand's first communications satellite. This ambitious project was named Thaicom by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, symbolizing "Thai Communications."
On December 18, 1993, Thaicom 1 was successfully launched, marking a significant milestone in Thailand's technological advancement. The satellite carried 12 C-band transponders, providing coverage from Japan to Singapore, and laid the foundation for future developments in the region's satellite communications.
Thaicom's journey didn't stop there. The company continued to innovate, launching additional satellites and expanding its services across Asia. A notable achievement was the development and launch of IPSTAR (Thaicom 4), the world's first High Throughput Satellite (HTS), which further cemented Thaicom's position as a leader in broadband and broadcast services.
In 1994, Thaicom became a publicly listed company on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, opening a new chapter in its growth story. This move not only provided the company with the capital needed to expand its operations but also increased its visibility and credibility in the global market.
Today, Thaicom stands as a testament to visionary leadership and innovation in satellite technology, continuing to connect people and businesses across continents.
