TenasiTech was a materials science company that developed and sold nanotechnology additives to improve the performance of plastics, primarily focusing on scratch and mar resistance. The company was founded in 2007 as a spin-off from the University of Queensland in Australia, based on patented technology developed by Professor Darren Martin at the university's Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology. Professor Martin served as the company's Chief Scientific Officer. Richard Marshall was the CEO.
The company's core business involved creating nano-additives that could be directly incorporated into various polymers during manufacturing, eliminating the need for expensive and less environmentally friendly secondary processes like hard-coating or painting. Its main product line, SOLID-TT™, provided significant improvements in scratch resistance for polymers such as acrylics (PMMA), nylons, and polyesters. This technology allowed plastics to maintain their aesthetic appearance for longer, a key requirement for clients in the automotive, consumer electronics, and appliance industries. A unique selling point was that plastics treated with TenasiTech's additives could still be reshaped, for example by thermoforming, which was not possible with traditional hard coats.
TenasiTech operated on a global scale with facilities in Brisbane, Australia, and Boston, USA, and had manufacturing capabilities in the US, Germany, and Australia. The company was venture-backed, initially receiving seed funding from Uniseed. Over its lifetime, it raised approximately $4.36 million through various funding rounds, including investments from Melbourne Angels, Brisbane Angels, and grants from the Australian and Queensland governments. In September 2020, TenasiTech's nanoparticle technology and associated patents were acquired by RTP Company, a global compounder of thermoplastics. Following the acquisition, TenasiTech is considered a dead-pooled company.
