Telephia is a research application that gathers data on mobile device usage and user opinions in exchange for cash rewards. The app operates passively in the background of a user's phone, collecting data anonymously to provide insights into consumer behavior and network performance. In addition to passive data collection, users may be invited to participate in surveys for additional rewards. The business model is centered on compensating users for sharing their data, which is then aggregated and analyzed. Users earn rewards, redeemable via PayPal, by running the application for a set number of hours daily.
The original Telephia, Inc. was founded in 1998 and became a key provider of syndicated consumer research and network quality information for the telecommunications industry. Its clients included mobile operators, device manufacturers, and investment analysts. In August 2007, The Nielsen Company acquired Telephia to enhance its measurement capabilities in the growing mobile media market. Following the acquisition, the Telephia brand was integrated into Nielsen's mobile measurement services. The current Telephia application appears to be a separate, more recent consumer-facing initiative, developed by HarrisX and StagwellTech, that focuses on direct-to-consumer data collection.
