In 1989, a reverse engineering group was spun out of a Canadian memory design company, MOSAID, and a new firm called Semiconductor Insights was born. The initial business model was straightforward: provide engineering consulting services by taking apart electronics to see how they worked. Over time, the company, later rebranded as TechInsights, realized the valuable content it was generating could be packaged and resold as reports. This created a new, scalable revenue stream. The company grew steadily through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions. A key moment came in 2016 when it merged with its strong competitor, Chipworks, unifying the two organizations in 2017 to dominate the market for technical analysis of semiconductors. This set the stage for a period of aggressive expansion. Starting around 2019, TechInsights went on an acquisition spree, purchasing firms like VLSI Research, The Linley Group, Strategy Analytics, and IC Knowledge. These moves weren't just about consolidation; they expanded the company's capabilities from pure reverse engineering into market forecasting, cost modeling, and supply chain analysis. In December 2021, the company itself was acquired by private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, signaling a new phase of growth and solidifying its position as the go-to intelligence platform for the entire semiconductor industry.
