TeachStreet

TeachStreet, Inc. was an online marketplace designed to connect students with local and online teachers. The platform provided comprehensive information including teacher backgrounds, student reviews, pricing, and location details. It also offered a suite of online business management tools for educators and schools. The service was free for students, but after an initial free period, it moved to a subscription-based model for teachers to list their classes.

Founded in June 2007 by Dave Schappell, a former Director of Product Management at Amazon, TeachStreet was headquartered in Seattle, WA. The company launched its website in Seattle in April 2008 and subsequently expanded to other US metro areas. Schappell's experience at Amazon, where he worked from 1998 to 2004, included leading product development for the Amazon Marketplace and managing the Associates program. This background was instrumental in shaping TeachStreet's marketplace model. The startup secured over $3 million in funding from investors including Madrona Venture Group and Bezos Expeditions.

A significant downturn for the company occurred in February 2011 when Google's "Panda" algorithm update drastically reduced the site's traffic, from which it never fully recovered. In February 2012, Amazon acquired TeachStreet in what was described as a "talent acquisition." The entire TeachStreet team was integrated into AmazonLocal, Amazon's daily deal service at the time. Following the acquisition, the TeachStreet.com website was shut down on February 15, 2012.
