In 1989, within India's burgeoning tech scene in Bangalore, the Tata Group embarked on a new venture, establishing Tata Elxsi to spearhead its entry into high-technology sectors. The company's initial mission was broad, aiming to foster projects in diverse fields like communications, process control, and advanced materials. The early story, however, has roots in Silicon Valley. The 'Elxsi' name came from a computer hardware startup co-founded by Thampy Thomas in 1979, which the Tata Group had invested in. When the original Elxsi shifted away from the computer business, the Tata Group retained the name for its new Indian entity. By the mid-1990s, Tata Elxsi began to sharpen its focus on software and product design services. A pivotal moment arrived in 1999 when it became the first Tata Group company to launch an Initial Public Offering (IPO), a move that capitalized it for further growth. The company quickly expanded its global footprint, opening offices in Europe and a new development center in Thiruvananthapuram in the early 2000s. Today, Tata Elxsi is a global leader in design and technology services, specializing in key industries like automotive, media and communications, and healthcare. It provides integrated services from research and strategy to software and electronics engineering, helping companies develop everything from in-car infotainment systems and streaming platforms to advanced medical devices.
