Founded in May 2013 by Dustin Pourbaba, Taplet emerged from Austin, TX, with a focus on enhancing the photo-taking experience on mobile devices. At the time, Pourbaba had prior experience in deal flow analysis at G-51 Capital, a prominent venture capital firm in Austin, and had co-founded a social network called CosmoFunnel at the age of 17. He was also recognized as a Global Fellow at the Kairos Society, an organization for young entrepreneurs.
The initial concept for Taplet was to move beyond filters and stickers, which dominated the photo app market, and instead concentrate on the mechanics of capturing an image. The company developed imaging technology designed to help users take difficult shots, such as capturing a golf swing or active children and pets. At its inception, the company operated in a prototype-ready stage with a team of six employees.
