Symphony Environmental Technologies PLC operates as a global specialist in developing and marketing technologies that make plastic products smarter, safer, and more sustainable. Founded in 1995 by Michael Laurier and Ian Bristow, the UK-based company is publicly traded on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange. Laurier, the CEO, has a background in his family's packaging business, where he shifted the focus from jute to polythene packaging in the 1970s. CFO Ian Bristow was a certified accountant in private practice before co-founding the company.
The company's business model is centered on the development and supply of masterbatch additives that are sold to plastics manufacturers in nearly 100 countries through a network of over 70 distributors. This approach allows for the enhancement of a wide variety of plastic products without disrupting existing manufacturing processes. Symphony's primary revenue stream comes from the sale of these proprietary masterbatches. For the fiscal year ending December 31, 2024, the company reported sales of £6.59 million.
Symphony's flagship product line is the d2w™ oxo-biodegradable technology. This additive is designed to be incorporated into conventional plastics, causing them to convert at the end of their service life into a biodegradable material in the presence of oxygen. The resulting substance can then be assimilated by microorganisms, leaving behind no microplastics. This technology is applicable to a wide range of products, from flexible films and bags to rigid containers like bottles for nutritional supplements. Another significant product suite is d2p® (Designed to Protect), which offers a variety of protective properties. The d2p line includes antimicrobial technology that has received FDA approval for use in food packaging, such as bread bags, to inhibit the growth of bacteria. Beyond antimicrobial solutions, d2p technologies also provide flame retardant, insecticidal, odour-absorbing, and ethylene-absorbing functionalities for diverse applications in packaging, agriculture, and healthcare.
