Sympa, founded in Finland in 2005 by siblings Keijo Karjalainen and Taina Sipilä, develops and provides a comprehensive human resources (HR) software solution. The founders, originally from Lahti, embarked on their entrepreneurial journey with the goal of creating a holistic HR system for businesses, a path that began with a bicycle ride to a funding meeting.
The company operates on a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model, targeting mid-sized and large organizations. Its core product, Sympa HR, is a configurable system designed to manage the entire employee lifecycle, from recruitment and onboarding to offboarding. The platform centralizes all employee data, automating routine HR tasks to allow professionals to concentrate on strategic initiatives. Key functionalities include Core HR, which handles employee information and assets; performance management tools for appraisals and goal tracking; and analytics for data-driven reporting. The system is designed to be multi-geo and is available in over 20 languages, supporting both local and global organizations.
Sympa has grown significantly since its inception, becoming one of the leading HR vendors in the Nordics. A major milestone occurred in August 2020 when Providence Strategic Growth (PSG), a US-based growth equity firm, acquired a majority stake, providing capital to accelerate product development and international expansion. In 2021, Sympa joined forces with Recruitee, an applicant tracking system provider, to broaden their combined product offering. This collaboration evolved, and in 2022, Sympa, Recruitee, and Javelo (an employee performance management software) joined forces under a new group called Tellent. This strategic alliance, backed by PSG, acquired kiwiHR and established Europe's largest HR tech ecosystem, serving over 6,000 customers in more than 100 countries. Following this restructuring, Keijo Karjalainen took on the role of Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) at Tellent.
The platform emphasizes a "Collaborative HR" approach, aiming to bridge the gap between HR departments, managers, and leadership teams to facilitate better decision-making. It boasts a flexible ecosystem with over 300 integrations, including payroll systems, e-signature tools, and business intelligence applications like PowerBI, and offers an open API for custom connections.
