The story of Symbiosis starts with a problem many private healthcare practitioners face. In 2017, physical therapist Subha Nagasubramanian wanted to open her own practice but was daunted by the high startup costs and administrative burdens. Her husband, Arun Mallikarjunan, with his background in IT and business, saw an opportunity. Together, from late-night kitchen table discussions, they developed the concept for Symbiosis: a "Practice in a Box" to help clinicians launch and manage their own private practices. Launched in 2017, Symbiosis, legally known as Practice in a box Inc, provides a two-sided marketplace. It connects healthcare providers with essential operational services like billing, marketing, IT, and even clinic space. This model allows clinicians to focus on patient care rather than the complexities of running a business. Subha's own new practice became the first to use the Symbiosis platform, quickly growing and validating the business model. Based in the Washington, D.C. area, the company aims to be a comprehensive solution for healthcare entrepreneurs. By bundling services and offering co-working medical spaces, Symbiosis addresses the major hurdles that cause over half of new healthcare practices to fail within their first three years. The company has since helped dozens of practices achieve growth and success since its founding.
