Sygnia is a JSE-listed financial services group providing asset management and investment administration services to institutional and retail clients, primarily in South Africa but also in the UK and USA. The company was established in 2006 following a management buy-out of the African Harvest group, led by Magda Wierzycka, who co-founded the new entity with Simon Peile.
Magda Wierzycka's journey began in communist Poland; her family fled to South Africa in the early 1980s. She pursued actuarial science at the University of Cape Town on a bursary and started her career in 1993 at Southern Life. Her experience includes roles at Alexander Forbes and as a director at Coronation Fund Managers, where she was instrumental in growing its institutional business. In 2003, she became CEO of African Harvest, ultimately leading to the formation of Sygnia. The company was initially funded by a mortgage on her home and grew without government capital. Sygnia listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 2015.
Sygnia's business model is built on offering transparent, low-cost investment solutions as a disruptor to the traditional asset management industry. The firm serves both institutional investors, including retirement funds, and a growing number of retail clients. Its revenue is primarily generated from investment management and administration fees. It has also introduced a RoboAdvisor for digital financial planning and an umbrella retirement fund to provide more cost-effective options.
