The story of Sword GRC isn't one of a garage startup, but of strategic assembly. Its roots trace back to a product called Active Risk Manager (ARM), first launched in 1987 by a company called STG. This group was an early pioneer, creating one of the first web-based enterprise risk management tools. Over the years, the company evolved, rebranding from STG to Active Risk. The next major chapter began when it was acquired by Sword Group, a multinational IT and software specialist, becoming Sword Active Risk. Sword Group wasn't done building. In 2019, it acquired Magique Galileo, a firm specializing in audit and governance solutions for the banking and insurance sectors. This move was complementary, bolting on new industry expertise. The combined entity was then officially renamed Sword GRC, with Nick Scully as its CEO. This newly formed unit provided a suite of governance, risk, and compliance tools to major industries like aerospace, defense, and energy. The final and most significant event in its journey occurred in April 2022, when Sword GRC was acquired by Riskonnect, a US-based leader in integrated risk management (IRM) solutions. The acquisition allowed Riskonnect to integrate Sword GRC's project risk capabilities, expand into new markets, and create a more comprehensive, end-to-end risk management platform under one roof.
