In 1973, a company named Swereco was founded in Sweden with a focused mission: to manufacture crutches and develop ergonomic products for people with disabilities. Operating with a clear purpose, the company established itself by creating aids for daily life, manufacturing most of its rehabilitation products in its own factory in Lenhovda, Sweden. This foundation in producing essential therapeutic devices set the stage for its future. The company's journey has been marked by a series of strategic ownership changes rather than a single founder narrative. In October 2015, Karo Bio AB acquired the Swereco Group for 250 million SEK, aiming to build a more profitable business in the non-prescription medicine and medical device field. This move integrated Swereco into a larger healthcare portfolio, expanding its reach. A significant turning point occurred in December 2020, when the industrial holding company J2L Holding AB acquired Swereco from Karo Pharma for 150 million SEK. Karo Pharma's strategic decision was to focus on its core consumer healthcare business, viewing Swereco's hospital-focused supply chain as outside that scope. Under J2L's ownership, Swereco was positioned for renewed growth, immediately embarking on its own acquisition strategy. Just one year later, in December 2021, Swereco acquired Sanicare AB, a supplier of incontinence and textile aid products, to strengthen its product portfolio and competitive position in the Nordic market. Through these quiet, strategic acquisitions, Swereco continues its long-standing mission of simplifying daily life through functional products.
