Sweden Ballistics AB (SWEBAL), founded in 2024, is re-establishing sovereign TNT manufacturing in Sweden after a nearly 30-year hiatus. The company was co-founded by tech entrepreneur Joakim Sjöblom, who previously founded Minna Technologies, and engineer Carl Duforce. Sjöblom's entrepreneurial background and Duforce's engineering expertise are central to the company's mission.
SWEBAL is constructing a large-scale, sustainable manufacturing plant in Nora, Sweden, to address a critical shortfall in the European defense supply chain. Currently, Europe has only one major TNT producer, located in Poland, creating a significant bottleneck. The continent's annual production of 6,000 tonnes of TNT is dwarfed by Russia's capacity, which is equivalent to 50,000 tonnes. SWEBAL's facility aims to increase Europe's locally-made supply of this crucial component for explosive munitions by 75%.
The business model focuses on strengthening NATO's resilience and deterrence capabilities by providing a secure, local source of TNT for military munitions, particularly artillery shells. The company has secured a €3 million strategic investment as of June 2025 to advance construction, with notable investors including Sweden's former Chief of Army, Major General (ret) Karl Engelbrektson, and Thomas von Koch, a founding member of EQT. The plant is projected to be fully operational by late 2027, operating 24/7 with a staff of 50. It is designed to produce over 4,000 metric tonnes of TNT annually, which translates to the explosive component for approximately 400,000-450,000 artillery shells. By sourcing over 80% of its materials and machinery from Sweden and prioritizing European supply chains, SWEBAL aims to reduce dependency on long-distance imports and enhance geopolitical stability.
