The story of Swarajya begins in 1956, launched by journalist Khasa Subba Rao with the patronage of C. Rajagopalachari, one of India's prominent independence activists. The weekly magazine was established as an intellectual counterpoint to the socialist policies of the time, championing individual liberty and free enterprise. However, following Rajagopalachari's death, the magazine's influence declined, and it ceased publication in 1980. Decades later, the publication found a new beginning. In 2014, a Coimbatore-based company, Kovai Media Private Limited, founded by Prasanna Vishwanathan and Amarnath Govindarajan, acquired the rights to the Swarajya brand. This marked a significant event: the revival of the magazine for a new era. They relaunched it first as a digital daily, swarajyamag.com, in September 2014, followed by a monthly print edition in January 2015. The new entity positioned itself as a "big tent for liberal right of centre discourse" and transitioned to a reader-supported business model. In July 2024, Kovai Media announced a new funding round of ₹3.6 crores from existing investors to fuel further expansion. This infusion of capital, led by Yuj Bharat Holdings, solidified Swarajya's footing in the digital media landscape, ensuring the continuation of its storied legacy.
